Windows 10 Subscription Activation uses a User Subscription License (User SL) assigned to a user to determine whether their device should automatically be upgraded to Enterprise edition.

As long as all client-side requirements are met (the supported Windows version, Azure Active Directory- or Active Directory-joined device, and Windows 10 Enterprise User SL assigned), each Windows 10 Pro OS environment the user signs on to will automatically be converted to Enterprise edition.

The following rules apply to how licensed are provisioned and managed by the service:

  • Up to five devices can be upgraded for each licensed user, and the list of activated devices cannot be modified by the administrator or user
  • If five devices are already on the list and the user signs into a new device, the oldest device on the list will be removed
  • Devices that are removed will cease trying to activate as Enterprise and convert back to Windows 10 Pro once 90 days has passed since they last activated as
