  • Azure Stack HCI is Microsoft’s primary server host OS for on-premises virtualization and software-defined storage.
  • It is optimized to be a Hyper-V virtualization host for scenarios including remote offices, edge locations, and data-center consolidation.
  • The latest version of Stack HCI improves reliability, configuration, and management capabilities.
  • Changes to the Azure Hybrid Benefit for Windows Server could make Stack HCI more attractive to customers with existing Windows Server licenses.
  • Stack HCI versions have a short support period that leaves customers little time to upgrade to new versions.

Azure Stack HCI 22H2 became generally available on Oct. 12, 2022. Stack HCI is a host OS based on Windows Server for hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), licensed via subscription as an Azure service. The 22H2 update provides new features and enhancements to reliability and security. Stack HCI has become a mature product and is better supported for the HCI role than traditional Windows Server, but it requires Microsoft-certified hardware, and organizations adopting Stock HCI must rapidly update to new versions to remain supported.
