Azure Communication Services is a set of cloud services and APIs that allow developers to include digital communication capabilities such as voice and video calling, chat, SMS, and e-mail messaging in their applications. Microsoft maintains the platform software and infrastructure behind Communication Services, enabling developers to add communication features with less upfront investment. Typical customers are software vendors or enterprise developers whose applications will communicate with large audiences and who benefit from compatibility with Microsoft Teams and Exchange. (Microsoft itself uses Communication Services in its Dynamics 365 Contact Center service.)

Near Term (2025–2026)

Communication Services continues to build support for agents, applications that promise to automate many customer service operations through natural language processing and task-specific inference. For example, agents built with Copilot Studio have been integrated with Communication Services APIs for chat and voice. For tasks such as voice recognition, Call Automation is also adding lower-latency audio-streaming APIs for transferring voice through the service.
