Changes to the Office 365 Security & Compliance Center improve case management, hold, search, and export capabilities of basic compliance and eDiscovery features. The changes should make it easier for an organization to meet legal inquiry and regulatory obligations by facilitating the collection and management of data for further examination. Organizations may need to test the changes to understand how they will affect both ongoing and future cases that rely on these tools.

Basic eDiscovery Process Improvements

“Discovery” is a pretrial phase of litigation that allows a party to request all relevant information from the other parties in order to prepare their case. Because much of the information that a party will have to produce is stored in automated data processing systems, including e-mail and other electronic document management and storage systems, the term “eDiscovery” is used to describe the collection, preservation, review, and production of electronically stored data. While eDiscovery tools are typically used to prepare for litigation, they can also be used by an organization to investigate matters for other governance purposes, such as proving compliance with a regulation or standard such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), or for internal investigations.
