  • Azure provides vast scalability, but techniques for scaling vary widely by service.
  • Scaling certain services may be disruptive to production solution operation.
  • Customers should learn about and plan for scaling Azure services, especially when several types of Azure services are consumed.

Some Azure services can scale automatically, some require manual action or custom code to scale, and some scale based on selections made when they are provisioned. Understanding and designing for the scaling capabilities and mechanisms of Azure services help ensure that deployed solutions can handle current and future user demand with minimal disruption.

Scaling Azure Has Unique Considerations

Designing for Azure solution scalability involves unique considerations that differ from those for on-premises deployments. Migrating on-premises solutions to Azure might require refactoring or reimplementation to efficiently take advantage of Azure’s scaling capabilities. For example, code that is capable of running tasks concurrently and asynchronously can enable the scaling benefits of using multiple instances of certain Azure services, such as VMs.
