  • Power BI Premium Gen 2 is a new back-end design that resolves performance issues of the previous Gen 1 architecture.
  • Gen 2 calculates consumption differently than Gen 1, so administrators should rebalance workloads to reduce costs.
  • Optional autoscaling features can help address burst demands and contain costs but should be used sparingly.
  • Moving workloads may require modifying security settings and revalidation.

Power BI Premium received a new back-end design, called Gen 2, that resolves performance issues and memory limitations experienced by many existing customers and changes resource consumption calculations in ways that can benefit customers. The changes can have a positive impact on existing deployments, but administrators will need to analyze new metrics, redesign deployments, and possibly move workloads between capacities. New customers planning deployments should understand the changes to help design deployments that optimize cost and performance. All Power BI deployments were automatically upgraded to Gen 2 in Mar. 2022.
