RoadmapAzure Storage Roadmap
Azure Storage is a scalable object storage platform that offers several nonrelational data storage services for use with Azure applications and databases, traditional file shares, and other workloads deployed on Azure and on-premises.
Product: Azure Storage
Near Term (2026)
A minimum billable object size for cool, cold, and archive tiers is being rolled out. Objects smaller than 128KiB will be billed as 128KiB . The new billing policy will go into effect for new storage accounts created on July 1, 2026 or later and will be applied to all accounts on July 1, 2027. Hot tier storage is unaffected.
Customers storing large numbers of small objects may want to consider packing smaller objects together before storing.
Long Term (Beyond 2026)
Storage is not only a critical part of enterprise IT infrastructure but it is also a major source of revenue for Azure. So, Microsoft has every incentive to continue to expand its storage and backup portfolio.
However, Tables and Queues are some of Microsoft’s earliest Azure products, and although they are not technically retired, they are not getting any ongoing investment.
