RoadmapAPI Management Roadmap
API Management delivers services to secure and maintain APIs. APIs enable separate applications to exchange data and call on one another’s capabilities, making them an important building block in most modern application integration projects.
API Management has been evolving rapidly to support new API types and protocols driven by AI applications, including chat services based on Large Language Models (LLMs), and applications that include autonomous agents that work with customer data. Apart from the gateway, API Center, a catalog service bundled with some tiers of API Management, will remain a high priority.
Near Term (2026-2027)
The API Management gateway component will need ongoing updates so it can monitor and control traffic from emerging API types and protocols. Microsoft sometimes calls these “AI gateway” features, but they are implemented by API Management’s gateway, not a separate component.
LLM Chat APIs. API Management can process traffic with LLM-based services to help organizations monitor behavior and costs. Planned improvements include a “Unified Model API” that maps between OpenAI and Anthropic chat protocols, enabling changes of models for cost or other reasons. API Management will also begin to distinguish among more types of tokens, text elements whose transmission rates drive LLM consumption charges.
