Update Sep-2025: PostgreSQL and MySQL services receive the latest versions of the products (version 17 and 8.4 respectively), highlighting Microsoft’s continued support; however, the MariaDB service retired and is no longer available.
Azure database services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB are generally based on community editions of the open-source SQL database products, although Oracle has taken over the reins of MySQL. The products are popular alternatives to Microsoft’s SQL Server product because they are simple to deploy and learn, and they cost less to license. Microsoft does not alter the underlying open-source products, which allows customers to move existing applications with minimal modification, although Microsoft adds advanced security controls and integration with other Azure offerings.
