Azure AI Search (AI Search) is Microsoft’s enterprise retrieval service for enterprise search and AI-driven search across distributed business data, and it serves as a core foundation for Foundry IQ. It attempts to solve the problem of fragmented, dispersed information by making enterprise data easier to find, connect, and use. The intended outcome is better search, consistent AI output, and broader use of enterprise knowledge. It impacts application teams, data owners, IT operations, governance leaders, and business processes that increasingly depend on reliable access to information.

Near-Term Roadmap (2026 – Mid-2027)

AI Search is becoming a shared enterprise infrastructure as Microsoft expands AI use cases and Foundry IQ dependence. The near-term issue is whether organizations put ownership, controls, and cost discipline in place before dependency grows.

Roadmap

Over the next 12 months, AI Search is likely to move beyond individual projects and become common infrastructure across applications and agent-driven workflows. That shift may improve reuse and speed, but its role under Foundry IQ increases risk: poor data quality, weak controls, or unmanaged growth will affect more systems as the same service supports multiple uses.
