SQL Database in Fabric is a special deployment of an Azure SQL Database relational database that’s primarily accessed from inside Microsoft Fabric. The main benefit for users is quick deployment and scaling of a SQL database without having to use the Azure SQL Database service directly or pay for it separately; the cost of using the database is deducted from a Fabric capacity’s resources. The deployment has fewer features than a full Azure SQL Database deployment and is primarily for departmental applications or as an operational store for data used in analytics. The deployment scales itself based on demand rather than being sized by an administrator, and the data is automatically mirrored into OneLake.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft previewed the service at Ignite in Nov. 2024 and took it to general availability at Ignite in Nov. 2025, alongside Cosmos DB in Fabric. The intent is plain: give developers a transactional database that’s already inside the analytics platform so that application data is available to reports, notebooks, and agents without a pipeline, and make Fabric the place where operational and analytical data meet.
