A corporate portal provides quick access to documents, Web content, and applications. Shown above is a home page of a hypothetical corporate portal created using Microsoft’s SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) and Office XP and implemented as a “folder home page” in Outlook 2000. It is designed to give Directions on Microsoft staff members access to specific document management and search capabilities that they need to do portions of their jobs.
The page includes four major content components:
The Categories component provides links to documents organized in eight categories (corresponding to Directions eight coverage areas).
The News component provides the days important news stories.
The Search component enables analysts to locate documents by keyword search.
All three of these components were created by Microsoft and come with SPS.
The Article Status component was custom designed. It encloses an Excel-spreadsheet that tracks the status of Update articles in progress.
Employees can use the “Content,” “Layout,” and “Settings” links at the top of the page to customize the dashboard.
