The Business Application Platform combines application development tools and access to data sources to create line-of-business applications and customizations for Microsoft-hosted services. The Common Data Model (middle) provides a standardized structure or schema for a variety of data sources (bottom). The Common Data Services (middle) provide an interface for programming tools (top) and data sources (bottom), based on the Common Data Model.

Services that benefit from the Business Application Platform (top) include Office 365 hosted applications such as SharePoint Online and Dynamics 365, and custom applications written in Visual Studio, Excel, or other tools. The Office 365 hosted applications can be customized with applications built in PowerApps and Flow, based on the Common Data Service for Applications (CDS for Apps).

Users of analytic tools such as Power BI, Excel, and Analysis Services will be able to build custom analysis with the new Common Data Service for Analytics (CDS for Analytics). The CDS for Apps and CDS for Analytics can use the same data, provided by the CDM.
