Office 365 Advanced eDiscovery addresses several phases of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM). The model (bottom) provides guidance and helps standardize the eDiscovery process. It defines conceptual phases to describe and manage the eDiscovery processes:

  • Identification—determining the data subjects or custodians (Office 365 users) who have the documents and data related to the investigation
  • Preservation and Collection—finding and keeping relevant documents and data safe for further investigation and production
  • Processing, Review, and Analysis—examining the documents and data to determine whether a document is relevant to the investigation, and whether any data is sensitive and should be redacted
  • Production—preparing only the relevant and redacted documents and data for additional investigation (using third-party eDiscovery tools) or provided to another party
  • Presentation—using the documents and data to support an internal investigation, make a case in court,
