Microsoft Fabric is a data and analytics cloud service that simplifies the deployment and use of other Microsoft data and analytics services. It combines them into a cohesive offering where developers can collaborate and share data but continue to work with the specialized tools they need. The structure of Fabric removes much of the complexity of deploying and paying for the separate services by providing an environment where the services are preconnected and share a common UI and security structure.

Fabric will most likely appeal to customers in the following scenarios:

  • Existing customers using one or more of the underlying services, looking to simplify management and use
  • New customers looking for a scalable, end-to-end, integrated data analytics cloud platform
  • Customers who need an integrated data analytics solution with tight security and data sovereignty controls.

Workspaces (Security Controls)

Workspaces (right) are collaboration areas usually created for a department, function, or geographic region. They are used to organize and control access to all the processes and content for a particular workload and provide the connection between the Fabric components (above) and the underlying data (below). Each workspace has its own security roles, administrator, and permissions, and its own set of data governance policies such as specific data sensitivity labels. Fabric workspaces are created inside Fabric capacities that are based in specific geographic regions to meet data sovereignty requirements.
