General Rules for Server Products Licensed with CALs

The following rules apply to products that have a client-based licensing cost component.

For exceptions to these rules, see the appendix, “Notes for Each Server Application“.

General Rule Products Adhering to Rule Exceptions
Customers can’t avoid the need for CALs (for each person or device that makes use of the product) by introducing a “multiplexing service” intermediary, which is defined as a software application or service accessing or using the server software at the request of or on behalf of a user or device.
  • Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003
  • Windows 2000 Terminal Server, Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server
  • Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0/2003
  • SQL Server 2000
  • SharePoint Portal Server 2001/2003
  • Rights Management Services
  • Project Server 2003
  • Live Communications Server 2003
  • Exchange 2000 Server; Exchange Server 2003
None
Either a per-device CAL or a per-user CAL can be used. Furthermore, customers may use a mix of CAL types simultaneously
