To implement data loss prevention (DLP) across all devices, applications, and services an organization might require multiple Microsoft solutions that may still leave some data unprotected.

Windows Information Protection can detect, classify, protect, and monitor data on certain Windows 10 versions and editions. The protection is based on where the data is stored (by domain name or IP address). However, it provides no protection for data stored on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 devices, or on commonly used smartphones or tablets.

Office 365 Data Loss Prevention and Office 365 Advanced Data Governance (data retention), both Microsoft hosted solutions, provide some protection for Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint Online. The protection is based on labels used primarily for data retention, as well as templates for common sensitive data types and common privacy regulations. However, it does not appear to protect data with all Office applications or Office 365 services.
