Since its introduction in 2005, the Microsoft Update site (and by proxy Windows Server Update Services) has grown from supplying only security patches for Windows to covering many other kinds of updates for Microsoft products and technologies, and even drivers for many types of third-party hardware. However, Microsoft Update is still not a source for restricted hotfixes and full product installation packages, and updates for some of Microsoft’s older products, such as Office 2000, are not supplied by Microsoft Update.

| Critical Updates | Broadly released fixes for specific problems addressing critical, nonsecurity-related bugs. |
| Definition Updates | Updates to virus or other definition files. |
