Excel 2007 will offer new features for Microsoft’s On-Line Analytic Processing (OLAP) platform, SQL Server Analysis Services. OLAP is a general term for techniques and technologies used to summarize, query, and analyze historical data to answer questions related to business performance. Shown here is an Excel 2007PivotTable accessing Analysis Services. Notable new OLAP features in Excel 2007 include the following:

  • The ability to analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) stored in Analysis Services (as shown in this graphic)
  • A simpler UI for designing PivotTables and the ability to convert PivotTables into “free-form” reports that users can more readily customize
  • Support for many Analysis Services features that enable OLAP developers to simplify data presentation for users, such as server-side formatting of data; server-side “actions” that enable users to drill through summarized data to source detail, follow hyperlinks to supporting documentation, or perform
