Mainstream support for Windows Vista will end in Apr. 2012. Support for Windows XP SP1 ended in Oct. 2006. In general, Microsoft supports a service pack for no more than two years after the release of its successor, so Windows XP customers will have to move to Windows XP SP2 (released Oct. 2004) to receive support for their systems.

Mainstream support for Windows 2000 Professional has already ended. Therefore, free support will not be available and further service packs are unlikely for Windows 2000, but paid support will continue. Since its last service pack, Windows 2000 Professional received an additional “update rollup” package of security fixes. However, unlike a service pack, the update rollup need not be deployed to obtain support from Microsoft.

Product Current Service Pack or Version Mainstream Support Ends Release History
Windows 2000 Professional SP4 (with update rollup) Ended June 2005; Extended support ends July 2010 Released: Mar. 2000
