New components in Longhorn will enforce many video copy-protection systems. Shown here are some of the major systems proposed or in use for video today.

System Attacks Prevented Status
Content Scrambling System (CSS) Copying prerecorded DVDs. Used on nearly all prerecorded DVDs. Supported on nearly all DVD players and drives. Cracked in 1999, and software to disable it is widely available on the Internet (although it is illegal in the U.S. and many other countries to use this software).
Advanced Access Content Protection (AACP) Copying prerecorded high-definition DVDs. Proposed specification for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, two types of high-definition DVDs expected to emerge in late 2005.
High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) Attaching recording devices to digital display outputs, such as Digital Video Input (DVI) and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). Not widely used, but could eventually be used to protect high-definition
