Charts & IllustrationsWindows Server 2012 RDS and VDI
The Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role provides remote users with access to Windows desktops or applications running on a server or to a Windows client OS running on a virtual machine (VM). The main RDS components include the following (gray boxes represent existing RDS components; white boxes represent components that are new or improved in Windows Server 2012):
Remote Desktop Web Access (top left) provides users connecting to RDS via an internal corporate network with a menu of remote desktop sessions, remote applications, or VMs that the user is authorized to use.
Remote Desktop Gateway (bottom left) provides users connecting from the Internet with a similar menu of options as the Remote Desktop Web Access component. Often, a reverse proxy server will be used to facilitate a secure connection between the remote Internet user and the Remote Desktop Gateway.
Remote Desktop Connection Broker (center left) manages the connections between the remote user and the authorized desktop sessions, remote applications, and VMs.
