Analyst ReportUser CAL Price Increase Planned for Mid-2015
[This report was edited after initial publication. See notes in italics below.]
The pricing differential between User and Device Client Access Licenses (CALs) for on-premises server products will widen from 15% to 30% starting Aug. 1, 2015, although some volume license agreements will insulate customers from User CAL price changes for several years. Pricing for Office 365 Enterprise suites and the Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) subscriptions will not be affected, even though these online services provide subscription-based User CALs for various on-premises server products. Raising traditional on-premises license prices could motivate some customers to transition to online services and encourage others to leverage existing perpetual licenses to park on recent versions for an extended period.
[May 25, 2015 note: The report was edited to indicate an Aug. 1, 2015 price increase. At the time the report was originally published, the plan of record was for the price increase to take effect July 1, 2015. ]
