In general, the primary focus of Microsoft’s current enterprise development and sales efforts is hosted online services sold via subscription—such as Office 365 and the Enterprise Mobility Suite—rather than on-premises products such as server applications and device and user management tools. In part to help encourage migration, Microsoft provides preferential treatment for some current Software Assurance (SA) customers as they make the move to online services. Specifically, customers with active Enterprise Agreement (EA) or EA subscription contracts can apply their current SA commitments for on-premises products toward purchases of online services subscription licenses, get preferential pricing for online services, and maintain relevant SA-related benefits they currently accrue.

Existing EA customers can make the move to online services selectively, within all or any subset of the organization, using two supported licensing approaches: layering or swapping.
