Azure Stack software follows a licensing model like Microsoft-hosted Azure, limiting upfront costs and scaling operating costs with usage. Azure Stack implements a subset of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform for deployment on-premises and in third-party data centers. The Azure Stack software and select hardware systems designed to run it became available for order in July 2017. Azure Stack could deliver many of the benefits of Azure to locations where Microsoft-hosted Azure is not readily accessible and to customers who need more control over the infrastructure where Azure workloads run. However, significant hardware costs and other factors need to be taken into account.

This report updates “Understanding Azure Stack Licensing”, which originally appeared on page 25 of the Aug. 2017 Update. It adds detailed information about capacity-based licensing of Azure Stack, and exact pricing of services for utility-based licensing.
