RoadmapDatabase Migration Service Roadmap
Heads Up: DMS is losing its automation through Data Studio and will most affect data analysts. Customers need to migrate to new solution by Feb. 2026.
Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) offers computing resources, orchestration features, assessment and testing tools, and documentation to guide customers through the process of migrating databases to Azure services. Destinations include mostly Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server in Azure VMs, and in some cases to Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL.
The service provides two versions:
- DMS (new) is used for migrating SQL Server , MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle databases
- DMS (classic) is used for MySQL and PostgreSQL databases and older SQL Server databases.
Product: Database Migration Service
Recent Updates and Near Term Roadmap (2025–2026)
Microsoft currently provides two versions of the service, called simply DMS and DMS (classic). Together they support a wide range of database migration scenarios to Azure, including migration from SQL Server, migrating from other relational and document database software, and migrating from one Azure database service to another. However, the services support different products, and customers may need to use both services depending on their migration requirements.
