Azure Databricks is a first-party Azure service based on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, a third-party product that Microsoft sells, bills, and supports as part of Azure. It provides a “lakehouse”—a single governed environment that combines the structured data and query performance of a data warehouse with the format flexibility and scale of a data lake—together with data engineering, SQL analytics, machine learning, and AI agent development tools. Microsoft supplies the underlying compute, storage, identity, and networking, along with integrations to other Azure services.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Azure Databricks is expanding beyond its analytics roots into a broader platform for operational data, AI-assisted business workflows, managed infrastructure, and centralized governance. Additions such as Lakebase, Genie One, serverless workspaces, and expanded Unity Catalog capabilities show a service aimed at reducing operational burden while reaching more business users.
