Microsoft Fabric is a SaaS analytics platform that combines Microsoft’s data integration, data engineering, data warehousing, data science, real-time analytics, business intelligence, and operational database services in one environment. Work runs on a Fabric capacity, a shared pool of compute, and is organized in workspaces, where each workload creates items such as lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, notebooks, eventhouses, and semantic models. Every item keeps its data in OneLake, a single tenant-wide data lake in open Delta Parquet format, under one security, governance, and administration model. Fabric IQ adds a business-context layer that agents and Copilot use to interpret that data.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft spent 2026 making Fabric the data layer for its agents. FabCon in Atlanta in Mar. 2026 took data agents to general availability (GA); Build in June made Fabric IQ and operations agents generally available; and FabCon Europe in Barcelona in Sept. 2026 put Fabric IQ inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, previewed centralized database management, and promised consumption-based billing. However, nearly every Barcelona announcement is a preview or “coming soon,” and Microsoft’s own posts disagree on the status of some items.
