OneLake is the core data management component in Microsoft Fabric. It can host and query most data formats that are used for analytics and reporting, and it can connect to and share data with a variety of external data solutions. Its primary purpose is to host data solutions (lake houses, data warehouses, and streaming databases) that are built by and shared among the Fabric experiences. It is based on open-source technologies, providing an attractive option for organizations that want to centralize analytic data on Azure but avoid the expense of Microsoft proprietary technology like SQL Server data warehouse.

Near Term (2025–2026)

The near-term roadmap for OneLake continues to evolve, and customers should tread carefully when deploying data into OneLake as it continues to mature. The core Lakehouse feature is solid, but waiting for certain areas of the service (security, lake houses, data warehouse, connectors, and others) to mature will decrease effort and cost.
