Project Server is an SharePoint Server application for managing project schedules and resource data, reporting time and status, and analyzing an organization’s projects.  It is part of Microsoft’s legacy Project line of project management software and services. Project Server receives little Microsoft development effort, but one version, Project Server Subscription Edition (SE), will probably be supported in its current form through 2029, and possibly longer.

Product: Project Server

Licensing: Project Server

Near Term (2026-2027)

Most Project Server versions lose support on July 14, 2026 (see fig. 1). Project Server 2016 and 2019 both leave support in July 2026. Customers will have to leave Project altogether, or deploy Project Server SE software, which can run on-premises or in third-party hosting. Project Server SE requires SharePoint Server SE.

Long Term

Long term, Project Server is unlikely to receive improvements except security fixes, bug fixes, and updates for compatibility with new software. For example, the SharePoint Server 25H1 update released in Mar. 2025 enabled Project Server support for Windows Server 2025 and SQL Server 2022. However, new features for Project Server have not appeared.
