The Azure SQL Data Sync service acts as a cloud hub for synchronizing data across multiple SQL Server databases.  Azure SQL Database hosts a central master database that syncs with one or more remote databases, either in the cloud or on-premises. The service can help organizations create distributed applications where data needs to reside in local database copies to improve connection reliability and reduce latency.

Product: SQL Data Sync

Near Term and Long Term (2025 and beyond)

SQL Data Sync, originally released in 2018, is scheduled for retirement in Sept. 2027.

Microsoft has not provided justification for SQL Data Sync’s retirement. The service is based on Azure SQL Database and mature SQL Server replication technologies that continue to evolve, so there is no apparent technical reason to retire the service. Most likely the service’s customer base is not significant, or the service does not generate enough profit to justify ongoing management and updates in light of other priorities.
