SQL Edge Roadmap

Azure SQL Edge is a small-footprint deployment option for SQL Server that runs in a Linux container and includes a special edition of SQL Server’s database engine optimized for low-powered devices, gateways, and edge servers running near IoT devices. It can process relational data, nonrelational JSON data, and graph and time-series data, and it includes an engine for capturing and processing real-time data streams.

Azure SQL Edge is scheduled for retirement in Sept. 2025. Microsoft claims the retirement allows it to focus on enhancing other offerings, likely meaning SQL Edge did not get enough adoption to make it worth further Microsoft investment.

Migration

Recommended migration options are limited to SQL Server offerings, but there are no prebuilt solutions that provide the same capabilities as SQL Edge.
