Update Oct. 2025 – It is still safe to use Synapse Analytics, but no one is sure for how long. Fabric is the future of Microsoft’s BI vision and customers should not expect to remain on Synapse Analytics indefinitely.

Azure Synapse Analytics is a multipurpose analytics and data warehouse service designed for organizations with SQL Server and Apache Spark skills. Developers can use the service as a hub for consolidating data from transactional (relational and nonrelational) data sources and performing large-scale analytics like aggregations to discover insights.

Product: Synapse Analytics

Synapse Analytics’ future is clear: Microsoft wants all Synapse customers to migrate to Fabric, its new end-to-end data and analytics platform. Fabric solves many of the complexities of deploying different services and sharing data and is the future of Microsoft in the data analytics space.

Near Term (2025–2026)

Microsoft’s near-term plan is to continue supporting Synapse Analytics while customers become comfortable with using Fabric, and while the Fabric service (especially OneLake) matures and gains more security and governance features. The duration for the changeover to Fabric will likely take several years.
