Azure Synapse Analytics is a workspace-based analytics service for organizations that want to run relational data warehousing, big data engineering, and data preparation under one security, development, and monitoring boundary. It combines a massively parallel processing (MPP) data warehouse with data preparation and data engineering using a T-SQL query engine over data lake files, managed Apache Spark clusters, and Azure Data Factory–derived data integration. Customers can run these engines against a common Azure Data Lake Storage account without assembling and governing them separately.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft has announced no retirement of Synapse as a whole, and every core workload is still supported. However, Synapse’s near-term direction is defined by Microsoft’s preference for customers to migrate to Fabric rather than by introducing new or updated features.
