Azure Will Require TLS 1.2 in Aug. 2025

(This report was updated on Oct. 26, 2024 to reflect Microsoft’s extension of the deadline for Azure’s final transition to TLS 1.2 or later, which was changed from Oct. 31, 2024 to Aug. 31, 2025.)

• Azure services will discontinue support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 by Aug. 31, 2025 and require version 1.2 or later of the encryption protocol.
• Organizations should ensure their applications, such as those accessed using Web browsers, communicate with Azure using TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3.

The Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol replaced Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for encrypting network communications. SSL and versions of TLS prior to 1.2 have been found to have vulnerabilities, and it is a best practice to use TLS 1.2 or later. (TLS 1.3 is the latest version.) Organizations should plan on using TLS 1.2 or later for all network communications with Azure by Aug. 31, 2025 if they have not already fully converted.

Updates May Be Required for TLS 1.2 Changeover

Certain software, such as OSs and Web browsers, requires configuration to use TLS 1.2 or later. Applications may require code changes to work with TLS 1.2 in cases where earlier encryption protocols were expected or hard-coded. The update process may involve client and server software upgrades, reconfiguration, code updates (for internal applications, in particular), and testing.
