Several server products, tools, and Windows components help developers build applications on the Microsoft platform. They include the SQL Server database product, the Visual Studio integrated development environment, the .NET Framework and Silverlight runtime platforms, the BizTalk Server application integration platform, and the Commerce Server platform for e-commerce sites. The Visual Studio tools and the .NET Framework development platform received significant updates in Apr. 2010, including improvements for collaborative development and revisions to the .NET Framework Common Language Runtime (CLR).

SQL Server

The SQL Server software consists of a database management system and a business intelligence (BI) platform. The most recent version of the SQL Server platform includes the following:

  • Reporting Services for creation and distribution of reports
  • Integration Services for extracting data from databases or other data sources for analysis, as well as bulk transfer between databases
