Application Virtualization May Simplify Desktop Support
The Microsoft implementation of application virtualization technology was released to manufacturing in Sept. 2008. Formerly SoftGrid Application Virtualization, Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.5 lets applications run in an isolated environment on each user’s computer and can deploy and update the applications from centrally managed servers. It is designed to make desktop management easier and less expensive by reducing conflicts between applications and allowing applications to be streamed from centrally managed servers so that users always have the most current versions of applications. In addition to gaining Microsoft branding, the 4.5 update improves deployment and administration support.
What Is Application Virtualization?
Application virtualization technology lets applications run in an isolated environment on each user’s computer and can deploy and update the applications from centrally managed servers. This is meant to reduce desktop management costs by lessening application conflicts on computers, and by enabling application components to be loaded on demand from a server as they are needed by the executing application.
