A preview of Azure Active Directory (AAD) pass-through authentication is available. AAD pass-through authentication should reduce the steps, systems, and expense necessary to federate Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) with AAD, simplifying sign-on and access management for hosted services such as Office 365. However, organizations with complex on-premises directories—particularly those with multiple federated forests or domains—must continue to plan and execute their AAD integrations carefully, as pass-through authentication does not yet simplify complex configurations.

Previous AD DS and AAD Integration Options

Organizations can integrate existing on-premises Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directories (AD DS in most cases) with AAD to allow users to log on to on-premises and hosted applications using the same set of credentials. Integration also enables organizations to manage access to on-premises and off-premises applications from a single directory, AD DS.
