Configuration Manager (formerly Systems Management Server, or SMS) tracks computer hardware and software and distributes and updates software. Configuration Manager 2007 was released in Nov. 2007 and updated with SP1 and R2 during 2008.
Configuration Manager 2007 SP2, an update to Configuration Manager R2, is planned for release in the second half of 2009 and will be capable of managing forthcoming Microsoft OSs: Windows 7, Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, and Windows Server 2008 R2. It will also work better with Intel Active Management Technology, specifically for managing wireless network settings and power management. A beta version of Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 is expected in June 2009 with final release within 90 days of Windows 7 release.
