  • Azure Cosmos DB hosts databases for large, complex applications that require global distribution.
  • Additional data models make the service available for even more complex workloads.
  • Recent performance updates enable larger database environments.
  • New management tools help load data into the service and enhance control over critical and sensitive data.
  • The service offers great potential, but once database applications are deployed in the service, it will be expensive to leave.

Azure Cosmos DB is a hosted, multi-model database service, supporting an array of data formats that are commonly used for Web and mobile applications. The service is primarily designed for globally distributed, data-intensive applications that need high-performance and global scaling, such as online e-commerce sites and multiplayer online games. The pricing structure separates data processing and storage, which helps control costs, but the use of data distribution and replication features may still be too expensive for smaller applications.
