  • Scale units (cloud and edge) enable certain functions in Supply Chain Management (SCM) to support improved performance, resilience, and disconnected operations.
  • Cloud scale units distribute SCM functions to Azure regions closer to the customer’s site.
  • Edge scale units (in preview) can process certain SCM functions locally, supporting occasionally connected scenarios.

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (SCM), a major component of Dynamics 365 Operations, provides warehousing, inventory, logistics, procurement, and shipping functionality. Scale units, which permit parts of SCM to run on different machines, will allow customers to run warehouse management and manufacturing processes closer to their physical facilities to improve performance and resilience, but the use of scale units requires extensive testing, especially for customers using customizations or extensions.

Scale Units

Scale units, introduced in Apr. 2021, allow selected capabilities to be distributed, add processing power, and enable processing to be located close to remote locations. Not all SCM functions can be placed in scale units; rather, scale units target the need for placing warehouse- or manufacturing-specific functionality, such as warehouse receiving and shipping, or manufacturing production jobs, close to (or in) the location.
