Analyst ReportExchange 2007 SP2 Spurs Migration
Exchange Server 2007 SP2, available now, adds improved administrative capabilities in areas including server auditing, backup, and diagnostic logging management. SP2 is required for interoperation of servers running Exchange 2007 with servers running Exchange 2010, which is expected by the end of 2009. However, SP2 does not run on Windows Server 2008 R2 systems; hence, organizations wanting to upgrade Exchange servers to Windows Server 2008 R2 will have to upgrade to Exchange 2010 at the same time.
New Features, Interoperability with Exchange 2010
Exchange Server 2007 SP2 is the first full service pack to be released for Exchange 2007 since SP1 was released in Nov. 2007, although update rollups, which deliver important bug fixes, have been released regularly about every two months. (The most recent rollup is Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Update Rollup 9, which was released July 2009.) When a new service pack is released for Exchange, Microsoft’s policy is to continue supporting the former service pack for an additional year, so Exchange Server 2007 SP1 should continue to receive the latest security and other patches through most of 2010.
