PerformancePoint Server has evolved quickly since its late 2007 launch, gaining major new reporting and data integration technologies as well as a service pack to make it compatible with more recent Microsoft releases. No future releases have been officially announced for the product, but the next version is likely to bring significant changes to integrate the many disparate technologies supporting the product.

In the meantime, the current version of the product could benefit organizations willing to invest in it, but it will require considerable effort and training of both business and IT personnel. Thus, companies should carefully evaluate whether the fine-grained performance management the product promises actually fits their needs.

Roadmap: Fast-Moving but Hazy

PerformancePoint Server has received many recent updates as Microsoft has dealt with the first round of bug fixes and incorporated some technology from the FRx reporting line to beef up the product. (See the illustration “PerformancePoint Roadmap“.) Major recent releases include the following:
