Analyst ReportGovern, Model To Avoid M365 File Crunch
- Running out of Microsoft 365 file storage can disrupt work and increase costs.
- SharePoint is usually the center of the problem, but fast-growing applications like Teams can contribute.
- Microsoft 365 governance teams should cover file storage as well as regulatory compliance and security.
Running out of file storage space in Microsoft 365 can bring work to a halt by putting services into read-only mode until the tenant organization buys or clears storage. SharePoint storage is especially likely to run out because it is used by many Microsoft 365 applications and shared across an entire Microsoft 365 tenancy. Customers should monitor the biggest storage consumers and tighten governance on applications, especially Teams. However, they may also have to plan and budget for regular purchases of extra storage.
(Microsoft 365 e-mail and chat messages and message attachments are stored in Exchange Online, which is not discussed further in this report.)
