Analyst ReportHyper-V and Cloud Storage Added to Data Protection Manager
The first service pack for Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 adds backup to third-party sites, Hyper-V support, enhanced protection for Microsoft application servers, and lower-cost client protection. DPM 2007 is designed to capture frequent backups of application data by enabling network backup of files from Windows file servers to tape-based or disk-based storage, and it is capable of taking backups many times per day, thereby reducing file restore times and the risk of lost data in case of failure. The new features, including off-site storage and branch office protection, give customers a more comprehensive Microsoft backup solution.
SP1 Adds Backup to the Cloud
A typical DPM installation includes a central server for storing data backups and agents on the target computers being backed up. Agents use the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to capture point-in-time snapshots of application data or databases and transmit them to the central server, which then writes the backup to disk, to tape, or both. Organizations typically store tapes off-site for data archiving and disaster recovery and configure DPM to allow users to restore files from backups themselves, which can reduce calls to help desks to restore accidentally deleted files. As is usual for Microsoft systems management products, customers must purchase a product license for each DPM server and a management license (ML) for each managed computer.
