An update to Hyper-V Server, the stand-alone edition of Microsoft’s hypervisor-based virtualization technology, brings new features, such as Live Migration, and could be useful for system development and testing, providing a virtual desktop infrastructure, and as a platform for running virtual machines (VMs) with non-Microsoft guest OSs such as Linux. However, the limited administrative interface and licensing restrictions of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 discourage other usages. It was released as a free download in Sept. 2008.
Closer to Feature Parity
Microsoft’s hypervisor can be obtained two ways: with Windows Server editions “with Hyper-V” and as a free stand-alone product called Hyper-V Server. In its first version, Hyper-V Server offered only a subset of the features available with Windows Server 2008. The second (or R2) version of Hyper-V Server offers the same features that are in Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, including the following:
