Analyst ReportLotus Migration Tools Updated
An update to the Transporter Suite for Lotus Domino makes it easier for large organizations to migrate e-mail and applications from Domino and provides Microsoft and partners further growth opportunities for Exchange and SharePoint. It also provides tools for migration from generic POP and IMAP e-mail systems to Exchange 2007—a potentially strategic addition as Microsoft tries to fend off corporate adoption of Internet-based e-mail services from providers such as Google. An updated management console and extensions to PowerShell make it easier to customize, but organizations with complex Domino applications will need additional tools and help from partners.
Transporter Suite Supports Exchange-Lotus Competition
The Transporter Suite is a platform for getting old data into a new environment. It consists of a core engine for extracting and loading data, a graphical management console, and PowerShell scripting extensions.
Transporter Suite was first used to migrate data from Lotus Domino to Exchange, Active Directory, and SharePoint. IBM’s Lotus Domino is a database/workflow server product that performs multiple roles, serving as a database for structured and unstructured data (such as e-mail or documents), a messaging hub for connecting people or applications, and a development environment. It combines capabilities that can be found in various Microsoft products, including SQL Server, Exchange, and SharePoint Server. Lotus Notes is the Domino desktop client, which is used to access e-mail, Domino applications, discussions, and workflow processes.
