Communicator, Communications Server, and related products will be rebranded “Lync” in their next versions, and software release candidates of the next versions are now available for evaluation.

The renamed products enable users to publish and see one another’s presence information, exchange instant messages, and engage in communications sessions that incorporate voice, video, application sharing, and Web conferencing. The next versions of the software (formerly code-named Communicator 14 and Communications Server 14) are to deliver improved voice capabilities (such as transmission of location information to emergency responders) that could enable them to replace telephone systems built on private branch exchanges. They should also enhance Web conferencing, integration with SharePoint, application developer interfaces, and other features.

The Lync release candidates are available at technet.microsoft.com/evalcenter/ff808407.aspx.
