Analyst ReportMigrating from SharePoint Server 2007
SharePoint Server 2007 leaves Extended support Oct. 10, 2017. Organizations rely on SharePoint Server for team collaboration, portals, and other important business functions, and the product often stores sensitive data, so most organizations should already be planning migration to supported technology. However, technical changes, decentralized management, customizations, and other factors mean there is no simple migration path from SharePoint Server 2007. Organizations will need to migrate to a mix of destinations, which could include alternatives to SharePoint, and will need a business-savvy consultant to help with the move.
What Is SharePoint Server?
SharePoint Server provides a platform, templates, and components for Web sites that enable collaboration and other business functions, such as the following:
- Document sharing
- Team collaboration
- Corporate intranets and extranets
- Enterprise search
- Content management
- Reporting and analysis.
SharePoint Server 2007 is the oldest supported version of SharePoint Server, whose current version is SharePoint Server 2016. Many organizations have customized their installations of the version. In the simplest case, customizations fine-tuned the user interface by changing settings on Microsoft-supplied templates. However, many organizations installed server-side code (sometimes called “full trust solutions”) and other types of complex extensions for processes such as supply chain management, leave request processing, SharePoint administration, and social networking.
