Windows and other Microsoft products are now being developed with a new release process and faster cadence, and the release milestones with public deliverables are changing. As a consequence, customers may have to adjust their expectations about what they can do with the interim releases that Microsoft makes publicly available at development milestones. This chart shows the traditional milestones and the new milestones for Windows releases and Directions on Microsoft impressions of what the changes mean for customers. Dates in this chart indicate Windows 8.1 milestones with a public release. Not shown are launch events (basically marketing events in celebration of the release) that often occur at or near general availability (GA), highlighting key hardware and software partners or customers committed to early adoption.
