Microsoft Office 2001 for Macintosh (sold as Office 2001:mac) offers improved integration with Office 2000 for Windows, a simpler and cleaner user interface, and Entourage 2001—a new Personal Information Manager (PIM).

Organizations with a mix of Apple Macintosh and Windows-based computers, or people who use both computers, such as a Mac at home and a Windows-based computer at work, are most likely to value the ability to more easily move files between Office 2001:mac and Office 2000 for Windows.

The simpler and cleaner user interface in the Mac version will help users be more productive with this feature-rich suite—an improvement that would benefit users of Office on Windows.

Integrating Office 2001:mac with Windows

Office 2001:mac reduces the problems associated with moving files between a Mac and a Windows-based computer. While Office 98 for the Macintosh and Office 97 and Office 2000 for Windows share a common file format, differences in the Mac and Windows file systems make exchanging files difficult. For example Windows applications support file extensions, which determine the program that opens the file if a user double-clicks on it, but Mac applications typically do not.
